Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
