Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United the Gap Among Music Fans

Marking two decades since the legendary game hit the market across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the means to become rock legends. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing anyone who's nailed the epic four-minute instrumental break before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the display in time with the music. Every sequence mimicked specific notes, creating the sensation of an authentic performance.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a significant impact on numerous musicians included, introducing classic bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges of licensing the recordings – even though initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for introducing their kids to the music they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group the Answer had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers the way the game brought classic rock to the forefront: “The game provided a bigger, new demographic. Typically such music was considered outdated material, however when it was included in the game and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated tag. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the band's first record was still unreleased in the US, so Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the band as they went on a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew had on the song on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the group greater revenue compared to their studio albums. It moved more than half a million copies upon release, while demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical mechanics and extensive personalization features. This track is challenging enough on the hardest setting, not to mention performed at increased tempo and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. They claimed it took months of practice of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you should pick up actual weapons and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game proved so vast that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song was used in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – each person has a unique path in music and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Iconic Controller

The best promotion, be it for automobiles, clothes or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

Most installments came out in just a half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring spin-offs like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene active, and there’s set to be something from the founders on the way. A new studio has entered production on their first music game. Original co-founders are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“We thought those games could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to continue for future fans.”
